MPL – Nomads at Tullett Park

  • nelson pre game

On the 21st of April we went out to Tullett Park to play against 5th place Nomads in the Mainland Premier League.

Three points will keep us right in the hunt for silverware and nearly book us into the top 5 and qualify for the South Island league.

The line up was the exact same from the Nelson game 7 days before and we started well. Within the first 15 minutes you would think we should have been 2-0. I had a feeling they were crucial moments. The longer the game went on the more Nomads started to get into it and eventually it was both teams having an even share of opportunities.

Going into halftime at 0-0 you were thinking if the next half was to be a repeat then we should just get over the line here. Unfortunately, as the game keep getting older Nomads were constantly improving and once into the mature part of the 2nd half they actually started to get on top of us. In saying that, we were still constantly getting good chances to score every 8-10 minutes.

It was in the 86th Minute that Nomads scored of a corner to go 1-0 up. After that we then showed amazing fight and desperation to create even more fantastic scoring chances but it wasn’t to be.

I felt the 1-0 loss was a bit hard done by but even we are not going to take our opportunities then that’s what can happen against any opposition. It’s obvious that scoring is our issue and we have worked hard with the boys to try and get them creating more opportunities. I don’t think we ever had real control in that game and that’s why we didn’t create more chances then we did but we still had enough to score from.

Nomads were a good team though!! Watching them against Tech the week before that it was clear we did a better job against Nomads then Tech did. So I was actually surprisingly happy with the boys effort.

To win the league we need to be scoring goals which we are not. We have looked very closely at the areas we can score goals and all can be improved dramatically. Pressing so well and turning over the ball 8 times in Nomads defensive 3rd should result in a goal. Having 9 corners should result in a goal. The 6 crosses that come in should result from a goal. And unfortunately, Nomads score from one of their 5 corners.

After that loss it puts us down on the table but two wins in a week against Selwyn then Tech will ensure we are still contenders. Nobody really stood out and put their hand up for MoM. James made some amazing saves but was at fault for the goal. Haris and JJ even when they play average could have got assists. Mid 3 didn’t dominate. I think Louie played well and all the subs that come on were really good. Connor, Zac and Sean.

Our next game is on Anzac day against Selwyn.
