WPL – Big win in the Reta Cup

Coastal Spirit 2 – 1 CashmereTechnical (AET)

Although this was just the first round of the Reta Cup it would have been a fitting final. Following on from the hard-fought draw in the first game of the season, both teams played with commitment and vigour. The game was physical throughout, partly because yellow cards were shown sparingly.

CashTech enjoyed more possession and territorial advantage in the first half but our defensive unit held firm. They were also giving strong direction to our play and we were not breaking out of the pattern.

In the second half we shuffled our pack and put JH at right wing where she provided a great outlet and was effective in passing combinations. It was through this channel that halfway through the second half JH played in Cody into the penalty area. She was fouled and Arna stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

At this stage we were on top and were not under too much threat. CashTech then threw extra players up front so the game opened up and it looked like we may get a second. However in the 4th minute of extra time CashTech got behind us on the right and pulled the ball back to be converted unchallenged at the far post. 1-1.

Facing extra time after being so close to victory was a big mental challenge for the girls but they rose to the occasion. Showing courage and desire they had the edge throughout. In the 10th minute of extra time Cody chased down a long ball from Rebecca and beat the goalkeeper to put us ahead again. This time there was no let up. Even when Whitney went down with cramp she got back up and kept going.

Player of the day was Ellena Firth for a composed and strong showing at centre back. Digger of the day was Whitney. The whole team as well as the bench and support deservedly felt huge pride for the way the victory was achieved.
