WPL – Tough win v Uni in Round 5
Universities 1-4 Coastal Spirit
This victory versus Uni was more hard-won than the score suggests.
Our squad only had one sub who was specialist goalkeeper Una Foyle. Then in the warm up Skipper Chloe Jones had a bad twist to her ankle. With our depleted playing resources in mind she courageously strapped up the ankle and took the field.
As the game played out the opposition allowed us a lot of time on the ball n our own half and there was space to play through the midfield but our passing let us down on a number of occasions.
We took the lead with a sharp finish by Arna from a pull back by Cody at the goal-line after 10 minutes. Not much later Universities profited from a wayward clearance from us and their left wing finished well with a good strike.
We regained the lead before half-time through Cody, but the game was none too comfortable for us. We needed the Jones to stay on. We were given even more time on the ball in the second half and got two more goals from one-on-ones which Cody completed for her hat-trick.
With 70 minutes gone and the game safe, we substituted Jones and put Una on at left wing with Arna coming in as playmaker at 10 – which enhanced our link up play in the final third.
A very satisfying victory as we needed the full extent of our squad and a fair bit of effort on the day to get the 3 points.
Player of the day, Cody Taylor. Digger of the day, Chloe Jones.
