2021 Chatham Cup - Round 2
This Queens Birthday (Monday) we continue our Chatham Cup run against another Championship side Burwood AFC, having beaten Waimakiriri United 3-0 in the first round.
The 2021 Chatham Cup (known as the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup for sponsorship reasons) is New Zealand's 94th annual knockout football competition.
The competition returns for 2021 after being cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19. It will have a preliminary round and four rounds proper before quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final.
Current holders - Napier City Rovers
The first round match away in Kaiapoi ended in a convincing scoreline although it took us 57 minutes to unlock Waimak, with a goal coming through Treye Butler. The other goals came from Mika Rabuka, and a late goal via club legend Tristian Nicol.
Our last encounter against Burwood was one the team would like to forget, an English Cup game which ended in Penalties. On that night Burwood were more than up for the challenge and came out on top.
Burwood are sitting 4th in the Championship and may be in contention for the playoffs to decide who will play in the Southern League next year and seem to be improving after a slow start to the season. Should be a great game and we look forward to seeing you there!
Other local Chatham cup fixtures include -
Ferrymead Bays v Chch United
Selwyn v Cashmere Technical
