 Board Members

  • Darren Johnson

    Board Chair

    Darren has been on the CSFC Executive Board since 2012 and has been Chairman since 2014.

    He was a member of Rangers AFC from the age of seven through the amalgamation and he now plays for the Masters Snowmen team. Darren also has a daughter and son playing their junior football at the club.

    Away from CSFC Darren is General Manager of Vision Systems a company employing 40 staff and has branches in Christchurch and Auckland.

  • Alan South

    Alan joined Rangers in 1977 at Youth Level winning the National Coca Cola Cup that year under Nick De Meyer. He had the privilege of being coached by Ken France and Ian Marshall at Southern League and National League.

    Alan returned to Rangers to play Masters in the 90s and then Coastal Spirit Masters in a playing then Team Manager capacity. When he is not working in his Property Maintenance company he enjoys Mountain Biking and Caravanning.

    Alan has been very fortunate to attend the FIFA World Cup in South Africa 2010 and Qatar in 2022.

  • Heather Hepburn

    Heather started playing for New Brighton Premier Women’s Football Team in 1978 and played for over 20 years.

    When New Brighton and Rangers merged to Coastal Spirit, Heather took on the role of WPL Manager and has continued to do so until 2023. Within this time Heather has coached many Coastal and Canterbury age group Teams, the current Special Olympics Canterbury Football Coach and the Chairperson of NZ Secondary School Girls’ Football.

    Heather is very passionate about the development of girls’ and women’s football and hopes to see the success of Women’s Football at Coastal Spirit continue.

    Heather is married to Andy, has 3 children (now adults) 2 of whom have over 250 caps with Coastal Premier Women’s Team.

  • Grant Hughes

    Grant has played over 300 games for Rangers senior men’s teams over the years, in National and Southern leagues, as well as the Chatham Cup Final. He is immensely proud his son, Paul Hughes, who also played and won the Chatham Cup with Dunedin Technical and has played senior teams with Rangers and Coastal Spirit.

    Grant has played Masters and coached junior and senior teams with Coastal Spirit.

    He is a lifelong Liverpool fan and lived in there for two years to follow the team, and has been to four World Cup finals: Italy, USA, Brazil, and Qatar.

    Grant has seven wonderful grandchildren who all keep him very busy.

    He has a passion for football and want to see Coastal Spirit grow as a club, locally and nationally.

  • Rowena Scherrer

    Rowena started with New Brighton AFC in her teens playing for the women's team and played for over 20 years. She watched as we merged with Rangers to become Coastal Spirit

    She has coached juniors, men's social grade, been a Mainland Referee, board member and staff member for Coastal Spirit.

    Rowena is a spirited follower and supporter of our men's Premier Team and enjoys following all of Coastal's teams.

    She returns to the Board to help grow and promote the club with her skills and attributes.

  • Ben McNabb

    Ben has been a part of Coastal Spirit since its inception, having previously led the predecessor New Brighton AFC. He is an avid supporter of the premier teams, and has played in the Sunday and Masters teams for over 20 years.

    Ben is keen to put his skills to use and promote and lead the club to a bright future.

  • Serena Baxter

    Allow me to introduce myself. I'm a proud mother of four and two years ago, I joined Coastal as a coach. Let me tell you, I've completely fallen in love with the club and the sport.

    Being part of a sporting family has instilled in me a deep passion for athletics and the power of teamwork. I bring that enthusiasm and dedication to the board, where I strive to contribute my unique perspective and experience.

    Together, let's continue to make our club an incredible place for athletes of all ages to thrive and succeed.

The Coastal Junior Committee

  • Serena Baxter

    When Coastal Spirit FC had the chance to introduce a new role in junior football, Serena seized the opportunity.

    With a deep love for junior football, she joined the board, aiming to shape a junior club that attracts everyone. Serena's coaching and competitive background adds to her coaching role as the head coach of the Coastal Spirit U13 Taniwhas'.

    Alongside the committee, Serena is committed to fostering an inclusive, enjoyable, community-centered junior club that appeals to all.

  • Rob van Deun

    Hi I’m Rob proud Dad and Coach of the U10 Knight Panthers Team.

    I would like to introduce myself as part of the New Junior Committee and look forward to interacting with players, parents, coaches and alike to better the future for our junior players coming up through their football journey.

    I have joined the committee to of course make a difference, to work with like minded people on developing a fun energetic future for all our Junior/Youth Teams.

    Coaching my Daughters team has re-sparked an interest that has been long lost and becoming part of something more has burned that fire and watching my own daughter thrive has been an absolute joy.

  • Straton Logan

    Straton has joined the Coastal Junior Committee (CJC) to support Serena (the Junior Committee Coordinator) and other CJC members.

    Straton has a background in working in Project Management in Sport and as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for Elite Athletes in Scotland. Having moved to NZ in 2011 he has had a change in career path and now works within the Public Service sector.

    Football has played a major part in Straton’s life, where he first got involved in coaching junior football when he was at High School and also played to a high standard of football in Scotland.

    He joined Coastal Spirit as a Junior Coach last year, where he now coaches his sons 10th grade Coastal Cobras team. Straton’s daughter also joined Coastal last year where she now plays for the 10th grade Coastal Knight Panthers.

    Straton is excited to join the newly founded Junior Committee to bring positive change to Junior and Youth football at Coastal Spirit. He wishes to build a community that is inclusive and that celebrates our young players.
