2021 Kate Sheppard Cup - Round 3

This Sunday(20th June) we continue our Kate Sheppard Cup run against Richmond Athletic in Nelson.

The 2021 Kate Sheppard Cup (known as the Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup) Founded in 1994, it was known as the Women's Knockout Cup, until it was renamed in 2018. What would have been the 2020 edition of the competition, was cancelled because of COVID-19.

Cup so far

The first round against University was a convincing display coming out 8-1 winners at Ilam Fields.

In the second round Cashmere Technical were a different proposition. The 4-1 scoreline probably not a true reflection of the game in which Cashmere missed a penalty which would have put them back in it.

Despite that we have been in some excellent results all season - in the league we are 9 from 9 with a goal difference of +65.

Round 3

Coastal Spirit has had some decent battles with Richmond Athletic in the past but mainly in the Mens competitions where in 2011 they fought a promotion battle that ended in our promotion after a tough away and then home fixture.

Not a lot is known about this Richmond women's side, though a quick look at the table shows they are top in the Nelson League. After 4 games they are unbeaten with 3 wins and a draw.

In the cup so far they have had a bye in round 1 and in round 2 beat the uniquely named Blenheim Valley Bullets 2-1. Mainland football had the following review of that game -

“On Saturday in Blenheim, in what was a very tight contest between Valley Sports and Richmond, it was a goal from Jenny Harvey that had Richmond go to the break in front. The even contest continued after the break, with Lauren Sloan scoring for the home side and Paige Fergusson scoring the second goal for Richmond.”
