Southern League returns!

Finally some football again this weekend against South City Royals in Dunedin. It has been over a month since the last game and no doubt everyone will be excited to be out there again. Both teams will have had a chance to recover from injuries and just about at full strength.

Formed in 2021, South City Royals is an initiative between existing Southern Dunedin based clubs, Caversham, Dunedin Technical, Hereweka Junior football club, and Melchester Rovers Junior football club forming a ‘hub’ where certain activities are conducted under a single team.

Here is a preview from the Football South website.

In Round 4, the Royals succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Selwyn United. They have an even record in the Southern League, having won two and lost two thus far.  Coastal Spirit currently sit second in the table having won three of their four fixtures so far. This weekend’s match now has an earlier kick off at 12pm due to Coastal Spirit’s flights. Royals Coach Richard Murray is excited ahead of a return to action despite the challenges posed by the recent lock down, “It Tricky getting into training but they boys worked hard over lock down in their bubbles, it’s been like a mini pre-season again.” Murray’s squad have been bolstered by the rest enforced by the break in play, “A couple of players had some niggles before the lock down and they’re now available to play.”

Murray’s side are stoked to get back out there, “We're really looking forward to playing, we’re know they’re a good side with plenty of experience.” He reflects that they have had some crucial victories, “It wasn’t too long ago since they beat Cashmere Tech, they were in reasonably good form, I think they will play well.” It’s a must win fixture for the boys in blue and white, “It’s a big game for deciding who takes one of the top two spots, it’s make or break for us really, lose that and we’re 6 points behind.”
